Curriculum vitae
Dr. Akira Yamamoto studied and completed his Ph.D. degree in Basic Pharmaceutics at Kyoto University (supervised by Prof. H. Sezaki) in 1987. He spent one and a half years (1987-1989) as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Southern California where he studied the mucosal delivery of peptide and protein drugs. In 1991, he joined the member of Kyoto Pharmaceutical University and served as Associate Professor in Biopharmaceutics at this University. In 1998, he was appointed to his present post as Professor at the same University.
His major research interest is focused on enhanced intestinal absorption of poorly absorbable drugs including peptide and protein drug and, in particular, improvement of intestinal and other mucosal absorption of peptide and protein drugs by various approaches. Recently, he is also interested in the role of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in the transport and absorption of P-gp substrates and improvement of intestinal absorption of P-gp substrate by various P-gp modulators. Furthermore, he has developed the colon-specific delivery system of peptide drugs and anti-inflammatory drugs using chitosan capsules. His research interest is also focused on the pulmonary absorption of poorly absorbable drugs including insulin and calcitonin and improvement of pulmonary absorption of these drugs using various absorption enhancers and protease inhibitors.
He has published over 198 research articles, over 77 chapters in book, over 61 reviews and more than 100 congress proceedings. He has received the Japanese Society for the Study of Xenobiotics Award for Young Scientists in 1996 and the Pharmaceutical Society Award for Divisional Scientific Promotion in 2001. He has also received Nagai Award of the Japanese Society of Drug Delivery System in 2006.
He is a member of Pharmaceutical Society of Japan, Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology Japan, the Japanese Society for the Study of Xenobiotics, The Japanese Society of Drug Delivery System, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), the Controlled Release Society (CRS) and International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP).
